Turmeric-Infused Honey and Garlic Recipe

The art of infusion holds a special place in Ayurvedic tradition, where patience transforms simple ingredients into something extraordinary. This particular preparation brings together the natural sweetness of honey with the complexity of garlic, creating a balanced blend that has been treasured in kitchens across generations.

Raw honey, preferably sourced from local beekeepers, forms the foundation of this infusion. When selecting honey for this recipe, look for one that's unprocessed and pure - its natural properties will help develop the complex flavours we're seeking to create. The honey acts as both preservative and flavour enhancer, gradually mellowing the garlic's sharp edge while drawing out its subtle nuances.

The choice of Ceylon cinnamon adds another layer of complexity. Unlike its more common cousin Cassia cinnamon, Ceylon cinnamon (often called 'true cinnamon') offers a softer, more sophisticated warmth. When paired with whole cloves, it creates an aromatic backdrop that complements both the honey's sweetness and the garlic's depth.

Our addition of Surya Prana Nutrition's Turmeric and Black Pepper with Turmeric Extract capsules brings a contemporary touch to this traditional preparation. This adaptation honors the original while making it more accessible for modern kitchens.

The process of creating this infusion is unhurried. As the ingredients rest together, they begin a gentle conversation - the honey softens the garlic's intensity, the spices release their warmth, and together they create something that's both familiar and novel. This is not just about combining ingredients; it's about allowing time to work its subtle magic.

Important Safety Notes:

  • This infusion is not suitable for infants under 12 months of age due to the presence of honey, which carries a risk of infant botulism.
  • While garlic is generally safe for most people, including children, very young children may be sensitive to its strong properties. It could cause digestive discomfort in some cases.
  • For children over 12 months, always introduce new foods gradually and in small amounts.
  • We strongly recommend consulting with your pediatrician before introducing this or any new food preparation to a child's diet.
  • If you're pregnant, nursing, or have any existing health conditions, please consult your healthcare provider before consuming.

Method:

  1. Peel and crush (or finely chop) the garlic cloves.
  2. Place the crushed garlic in the sterilised jar and let it sit aside for about 10 minutes. Crushing garlic and letting it sit for 10 to 15 minutes allows the release of allicin, a key active compound of garlic which may have potential health benefits.
  3. After 10 minutes, add enough honey to the jar to completely cover the garlic. You should use equal quantities of honey and crushed garlic. The exact amount will depend on the size of your jar and the amount of garlic you have but aim roughly for an equal ratio, leaving some air space at the top of the jar.
  4. Split open the Surya Prana Nutrition Turmeric & Black Pepper with Turmeric Extract capsules and add the contents to the jar.
  5. Then, add the whole cinnamon sticks and cloves.
  6. Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure that all the ingredients are well combined.
  7. Allow the mixture to stand for 24 hours before using it to allow the flavours to infuse together.

Shelf Life

  • Keep for a few months.
  • Over time, garlic may become tough and rubbery. This is how you know it has expired.

Storage Tip

  • Store in a cool, dark place, preferably the refrigerator.
  • Remember to always check the mixture for any signs of spoilage and use clean spoons when scooping to maintain its longevity.

Disclaimer: Consult a healthcare professional before incorporating such infusions into your diet, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking medications. Additionally, avoid this recipe if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.

Honey should not be given to infants under 12 months of age due to the risk of botulism, a rare but serious form of food poisoning. Garlic is generally safe for most people, including children, when consumed in moderation. However, infants and very young children might be more sensitive to garlic and it could cause digestive discomfort.

It's always a good idea to consult with a paediatrician or healthcare provider before introducing any new foods to a child's diet, especially if there are concerns about potential risks or allergies.
